To launch ‘Clock’, the third edition in the Science of the Secondary series, Atelier HOKO developed a time-based kinetic installation that illustrates the various rhythms of reading commonly practised by people. Six identical copies of ‘Science of the Secondary: Clock’ are presented, each operated by an automated page turning machine pre-programmed to mimic the different reading intentions and rhythm such as ‘browsing’, ‘quick flip’, ‘image grazing’ or ‘word-by-word’. The audience are invited to read the book(s) and discover for themselves, their own tempo and rhythm of reading, and to consider how this everyday behaviour can be a unit measurement of time.
